Iranians Regain Internet Access but Face Persistent Restrictions

After a monthslong shutdown, Iranians are back online with restricted access and potential for service improvements.
CAIRO: Following a monthslong shutdown, Iranians began regaining internet access on Wednesday.

Authorities claimed the decision to lift some restrictions was linked to improving conditions in ongoing negotiations towards a more permanent truce.

However, users reported slow and spotty connections, with platforms like YouTube and Instagram heavily restricted, similar to pre-shutdown levels.

The internet outage had lasted since January, initially implemented during nationwide protests that led to a violent crackdown resulting in thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of detentions.

According to Netblocks, Iran's connectivity has reached approximately 86% of its pre-shutdown capacity.

However, internet traffic remains at around 40%, indicating usage is still significantly impacted.

Amir Rashidi, an Iranian cybersecurity analyst, noted that disruptions are widespread, suggesting the shutdown may not be entirely over.

The Iranian government had justified the outage as a military necessity after US and Israeli strikes in February targeted Iran's leadership, leading to further internet restrictions.

The prolonged shutdown severely affected various sectors of the Iranian economy and society.

With an estimated 90 million people disconnected from the global internet for most of 2026, numerous online careers were disrupted, exacerbating economic hardships.

The lack of internet access made it challenging for families to communicate across borders during times of unrest.

During this period, data prices surged, with a gigabyte costing around $7.50 in Tehran—prices have now dropped back to about $2.25 for 30 gigabytes but remain under tight government control.

Many Iranians relied on virtual private networks (VPNs) to bypass these restrictions, which became increasingly costly as the economic situation worsened.

As services gradually resume, online businesses and content creators are experiencing mixed outcomes.

While some have begun re-emerging with announcements on platforms like Instagram and Telegram, others report significant losses in audience engagement due to reduced internet access speeds and restricted app availability.

Iranian authorities claim the shutdown was essential for national security during wartime conditions, facing criticism for the economic and social impacts of their decisions.

Despite a partial return to service, concerns over the reliability and extent of internet connectivity persist among the Iranian population.
