France's Culture Minister Rachida Dati to Face Trial on Corruption Charges
Dati, who holds ambitions to become Paris mayor next year, denies the allegations and will continue her work in government.
France’s Culture Minister Rachida Dati is set to go on trial accused of corruption and abuse of power while she was a European Parliament member.
The allegations stem from suspicions that she lobbied for the Renault-Nissan car group between 2010 and 2012, while serving as an MEP. Dati, who was justice minister under Nicolas Sarkozy from 2007 to 2009, denies these charges.
She has vowed not to back down despite the impending trial.
An associate of President Emmanuel Macron stated that Dati will remain in her position as the referral is not equivalent to a conviction.
Additionally, Carlos Ghosn, former chairman and CEO of Renault-Nissan, has also been ordered to stand trial for his involvement in this case.
The dates for both trials are yet to be decided but could potentially take place after the Paris municipal elections in March next year.
