Euphrates River Flooding Damages Homes and Prompts Evacuations in Syria

Rising water levels in the Euphrates River cause flooding, affecting northern and eastern Syria.
Water levels in the Euphrates River in northern and eastern Syria have risen over the past two days, resulting in flooding that has damaged homes, businesses, and agricultural fields.

Authorities have urged residents living along the riverbanks to move inland due to the rare occurrence of such floods since Turkey built dams decades ago that control the flow of the river into Syria and Iraq.

The floods primarily affected the northern province of Raqqa and the eastern province of Deir El-Zour.

State media reported significant damage to properties in these regions, highlighting the severity of the situation.

The flooding is attributed to higher-than-usual rainfall this year, leading authorities to open some gates at the Euphrates Dam to alleviate pressure on the dam.

With the opening of the gates, approximately 1,800 cubic meters of water flow per second, which is expected to cause further increases in water levels.

State news agency SANA warned that water levels could rise by around 2 meters due to these actions.

Individuals affected by the flooding have shared their losses and experiences.

Mohammed Amin, a 65-year-old owner of a famous Greek House restaurant in Raqqa, reported significant damage amounting to thousands of dollars.

The restaurant's main hall, where water levels were several centimeters high, even saw fish swimming amidst the debris.

Sabha Mohammed, a 50-year-old displaced resident from Maadan town in Raqqa province, lost many of her belongings as floodwaters washed away her tent situated near the riverbank.

She recounted the early morning onset of the flooding and expressed concerns about her losses.

In response to these developments, Syria's Civil Defense has issued safety precautions for residents.

They strongly advise against swimming in the river, crossing small bridges, or using boats during the flood.

Additionally, they have urged residents to relocate their livestock to higher areas for safety.

The situation highlights the potential consequences of climate change and irregular rainfall patterns on global water bodies and their surrounding environments.
