Former Al Hilal and Al Nassr Coach Artur Jorge Passes Away at 78
Portuguese football coach Artur Jorge, known for his previous stints with Saudi giants Al Hilal and Al Nassr, as well as French club Paris Saint-Germain, has passed away on Thursday at the age of 78 following a long illness, as announced by his family and his former club.
In a statement released by Portuguese media, Jorge's family expressed their deep sadness, "It is with profound sorrow that the family of Artur Jorge Braga de Melo Teixeira announces his passing this morning in Lisbon after a long battle with illness. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones."
Jorge, who also played for and managed the Portuguese national team and clubs like Benfica and Porto, took the helm at Paris Saint-Germain between 1991 and 1994, clinching the league title during his tenure. He returned to PSG for a brief period in the 1998-1999 season.
Paris Saint-Germain praised the "man with the famous mustache," calling him "cultured and a Francophone speaker."
As a Benfica player, Jorge won four league titles. Known for his scoring prowess (215 goals in 316 matches), he played in 16 international games for Portugal.
Porto, where Jorge led the team to three league titles, mourned his loss with an official statement, "FC Porto grieves the loss of one of the greatest figures in its history."
Artur Jorge managed Al Nassr in the 2000-2001 season, where he endured four final losses, and then went on to coach their traditional rivals Al Hilal, although his tenure there was short-lived following a loss in a final match. He returned to Al Nassr in 2006 but was dismissed from his position after just two matches, specifically following the infamous 4-1 defeat to newly promoted Al Faisaly.
